Whether you currently find yourself in this plumbing predicament or simply wish to equip yourself with this knowledge for the future, continue reading for step-by-step instructions from your professional team at Five Star Columbus Plumbing

STEP 1: HAVE YOU TURNED THE WATER OFF?

If an object has fallen into your sink drain, it is crucial to immediately turn off the sink faucet and refrain from using it until the problem is resolved and the item is retrieved. It is important to avoid the risk of further pushing the object down the drain and into the mainline. Typically, smaller items like rings tend to get stuck and trapped in the P-trap, remaining there unless retrieved.

STEP 2: HAVE YOU TAKEN OUT THE DRAIN STOPPER?

To expedite the process, it is highly recommended to remove the drain stopper (if you have one) to gain a clear view of the drain. If it does not come out easily, you may need to locate and unscrew the pivot rod arm connected to the sink’s drainpipe beneath the sink. Do this by using a wrench or pliers. Depending on the situation, a flashlight or even the selfie mode on your phone can provide better visibility of the pipe. Once the pivot rod arm is loosened, return to the drain stopper in the sink and check if it can now be removed. If successful, proceed to step three.

STEP 3: HAVE YOU TRIED TO “FISH” IT OUT?

Ever heard of a grabber claw? This nifty tool can definitely make the whole experience a little less daunting. This four-pronged gem is designed to fit into those narrow spaces, like a sink drain, allowing you to grab and remove blockages. In our case, it might just help us retrieve your lost item. You should be able to swing by any home improvement store and snag one at your convenience. With a little bit of patience and the trusty help of a grabber claw, you may just be able to pull yourself out of your sink drain drama and get your ring (or other item) back in your hands!

OR

ALTERNATE STEP 3: HAVE YOU USED A MAGNETIC TOOL?

Magnets are a great option, too. However, you will need the right kind – one that is strong enough to pull your item up and one that won’t fall off and also get lost in the pipes. A telescoping magnetic wand would be a great choice! These nifty wands are extendable and magnetic, so they can come in handy when you’re in a tight spot like this. Just remember, they won’t work for silver or gold rings or jewelry since those aren’t magnetic.

OR

ALTERNATE STEP 3: HAVE YOU USED A SHOP VAC?

To retrieve a lost item, consider using a shop vac. Begin by placing a nylon stocking over the end of the shop vac nozzle. With a firm grip on the nozzle, position it directly over the sink drain and activate the shop vac. The suction force should pull the item towards the nylon net, allowing you to easily retrieve it. This method has proven successful in recovering rings and other small objects.

OR

ALTERNATE STEP 3: HAVE YOU REMOVED THE P-TRAP?

One essential method to consider is the P-trap. This crucial component, shaped like the letter P, is located in your drainpipe. Its purpose is twofold: first, it retains pockets of water to prevent toxic and foul-smelling sewer gas, such as methane, from entering your home. Second, it effectively contains stray objects, similar to the situation we currently find ourselves in. The P-trap plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy and odor-free environment.

The P-trap, typically made of metal or PVC, is located beneath the sink. Before proceeding, it is advisable to place a bucket or container directly beneath the P-trap to collect any water, debris, or potentially lost items. Carefully loosen the two nuts positioned above and below the trap to remove it. Once both nuts are loosened, the P-trap can be detached, allowing you to empty its contents into the bucket below. Following these steps, you should now have your ring or item back in your possession. Congratulations on the successful retrieval!

After completing the task, ensure that you securely return everything to its original position, including the drain stopper, pivot rod arm, and the P-trap. In the realm of ring retrieval, precision, and patience are your strongest assets. We hope this has helped you in turning a potentially disastrous situation into a successful rescue mission.
